Laura Franks Bexley CPI, Second Quarter, 2010. Reported Tuesday June 8.

This is Laura Franks reporting the Bexley Consumer Price Index for the second quarter, 2010.

The Bexley CPI reports on the aggregate prices paid for a uniform basket of merchandise purchased at retail in Bexley and nearby retail stores.

The Bexley CPI measures the change of prices for typical retail purchases made by Bexley residents.

The Bexley Consumer Price Index can be compared to the price changes reported by the Bureau of Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor. The comparison can provide useful information for Bexley consumers about local price changes compared to price changes in other parts of the United States.

As of the second quarter, 2010 compared to the first quarter, 2010, Bexley prices showed a 3% decrease. One item was discounted by 41%, but this was not quite as significant as it sounds because the non-sale price on this item was actually $.40 higher than last quarter. Also effecting the calculations were two (2) food items: one (1) of which was returned to it’s pre-sale cost and the other had it’s price raised by 6% from last quarter.

Still, no matter how you look at it a 3% decrease in prices is good and makes it even nicer to live in Bexley.

And just remember, as the country song says "God is great, beer is good and people are crazy….."

This is Laura Franks for the WCRX-LP, 102.1 FM Bexley Consumer Price Index Report.

Three more texting bans. Sharon Montgomery's reports on Bexley Public Radio.

-
Columbus City Council passed their primary offense ordinance Monday April 5: 6 yes, 1 absent. The Columbus suburb of New Albany passed theirs Tuesday evening April 6: 4 yes, 3 absent.

The New Albany sponsor listened to me with an open mind last month when I gave three reasons why their secondary offense needed to be a primary offense. One of the reasons was for getting it on the citation and crash report form so we can start counting violations and crashes, like we do with DUI. The sponsor changed it to a primary offense.

The Cleveland suburb of South Euclid's secondary offense (drivers can't talk on a hand-held phone, text, or use a computer) law went into effect Thursday April 1. The ordinance was sponsored by David Miller, South Euclid council president.

Some Central Ohio Trauma System members and I spoke again at Columbus. COTS apparently has been working behind the scenes with the City of Columbus. I'm hoping they're willing to coordinate efforts at the state level and with the growing interest in some of the high schools to get involved. I see a great place for them in education campaigns.

State Representative Nancy Garland (one of the two primary sponsors of HB 415 that passed the House 86-12 last Wednesday March 31 and the sponsor who has vigorously promoted the bill) attended the Columbus city council meeting, also.

I spoke again at New Albany and Rep. Garland also spoke.

Neither the Columbus nor New Albany ordinance provides a grace period for warnings. Each ordinance takes effect in about a month.

Rep. Garland is, predictably, handling this very skillfully. Obviously part of promoting her bill is being positive so she's not as free as I am to say some senators oppose this so strongly it's not likely HB 415 or SB 164 will get through the Senate. What Garland is saying is we don't know yet what the Senate will do with either bill so she advises local governments to do what they feel they need to do to make their communities safe.

Representative Garland and AAA will be strategizing soon. I told her Tuesday April 6 that some of the supporters I correspond with are just waiting for the word to start applying some pressure on the Senate committee.

I'm mostly overjoyed and relieved by these new laws, but I'm a little nervous about Columbus. The Columbus safety department seemed to be strongly behind this legislation: The safety director, assistant safety director, and the fire department have been vocal supporters; but today's newspaper story reported Police Chief Distelzweig saying things like "officers will use discretion" and, "It boils down to priorities." I hope those comments don't mean what they sound like. We'll see.

The snowball effect is already starting. Gahanna city council office got an e-mail today from a resident who hopes Gahanna will join Columbus. Gahanna high school students are ready to get involved. After I've talked more with them tomorrow and April 14, I'll report what they want to do. I don't want to jump the gun and report wrong or steal their thunder.

The General Assembly schedule online says sessions resume next week. Today's Senate Journal says the next session is Thursday. I think that session will not be a voting session and I don't think they'll do any committee assignments until next week. As soon as HB 415 gets assigned to a Senate committee, I'll let supporters know, and give them contact information for the chair.

Bexley library board set to name new director. Report by John Matuszak for Bexley Public Radio.

The Bexley Library Board of Trustees is expected to appoint the new director of the institution at a meeting to be held Dec. 17.

The name of the individual is not being released until the official announcement is made, according to Susan Studebaker, the library's interim director.

The director is a Bexley resident with previous experience running a library.

Studebaker has been serving as interim director since the retirement of longtime director Robert Stafford in August. During her brief tenure, Studebaker worked with the trustees and a levy campaign committee to pass a tax issue that offsets some of the cuts in state funding.

The new director will take over a library on better financial footing due to the additional local tax money. Along with maintaining current staffing and hours, the library will be able to bolster its new materials purchases, add a teen lounge and offer wireless Internet access, among other improvements.

Laura Franks. What is the market value for California script in Bexley?

The State of California ran out of cash in July and used “script” to pay its bills. State employees, third party vendors and service providers received pieces of paper that look like checks as payment of wages and invoices. Although called “script,” and “California IOUs” the papers are more properly called “warrants.”

Warrants are one official instructing another official to do something within their authority as officials. An arrest warrant is a judge telling a law enforcement officer to take someone into custody. The California warrants are the state controller telling the state treasurer to pay money on a particular future date. In this case the date is about two months in the future.

Some California banks, Wells Fargo and Bank of America are the most prominent examples, accept the warrants for deposit into checking and savings account. Some banks are accepting the warrants but discounting the face amount of the warrant by two or three percent. The discount represents an interest charge by the bank for the time the script is unpaid by California.

The California script is due on October 2, 2009 and carries an annual interest rate of 3.75 percent.

Speculators are offering to buy the script at discounts on Craigslist. There are internet exchanges where holders of the warrants can offer them for sale. One of these exchanges is the creation of Brandon Schlichter who is a resident of Columbus.

Does this California script have any value in Bexley? Will Bexley restaurants and other retail establishments accept the California script as a form of payment. To find out Bexley Public Radio called three Bexley restaurants: The Top, Bexley Monk and Guiseppes Ritrova. Bexley Public Radio also posed the question to the home offices of Walgreens and CVS, two national chain drug stores serving the Bexley community. Both Walgreens and CVS have retail stores in California.

The manager at The Top Restaurant said unequivocally that they “can’t accept” the script as payment.

The host at Bexley Monk left the question open but said that none of the California script had been presented and then, as an after thought, said that he didn’t think it was likely that anyone would offer the script as a form of payment. We take this response as a polite “non.”

The position of Giuseppe’s Ritrova was also unequivocal about the California script. The host said that “we won’t accept it.”

As to the drug stores, emails were sent to the home offices asking whether California script would be accepted in payment for purchases at the East Broad Street Walgreens location and the East Main Street location of CVS.

Neither home office has replied to the email. After five days of no response, we are taking the silence as “no.”

CONCLUSION. California script has zero value in Bexley.

The credit score of California seems to be below one hundred and fifty points in our Midwestern paradise.

Comm Bancorp Inc. (NASDAQ: CCBP) July 22, 2009 and its Board of Directors today declared a dividend of $0.28 per share for the third quarter of 2009. These earnings represent an increase of $278,000, or 13.2%, compared to $2,110,000 for the year ended June 30, 2008. Earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2009 were $905,000, or $0.84 per share ($0.74 per share diluted), an increase of 1.8% compared to $889,000 for the quarter ended June 30, 2008.

General Mills (NYSE: GIS) July 14, 2009 raised its annualized dividend by 9% to $1.88 from $1.72 per share, earlier. The quarterly dividend increased by 4% to $0.47 and is payable on August 3, 2009, to shareholders on record as of July 10, 2009.

The dividend increase is a testimony of the company’s robust financial health, confidence in its key growth strategies and excellent growth prospects, going forward.

GIS reported strong fourth quarter and full year 2009 results. The company’s U.S. retail unit, which includes Pillsbury baking products and Green Giant Frozen vegetables, posted a strong 12% increase. In addition, core brands such as Yoplait and Big G cereals also posted double-digit revenue increase.

Harleysville Savings Financial Corp. (NASDAQ: HARL) July 15, 2009 announced an unusual move for a bank these days: The small Montgomery County bank, which has $825 million in assets, boosted its quarterly dividend.

The 5.6 percent increase, to 19 cents from 18 cents, comes at a time when many banks are cutting their dividends to rebuild a capital base battered by losses on loans and investments.

The company also reported a quarterly profit of $856,000, or 24 cents per share, down from $1.04 million, or 29 cents per share in the same period a year ago.

This year's results included an expense of $287,000 for a Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. special assessment to rebuild that agencies coffers.

Healthcare Services Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: HCSG) July 14, 2009 reported that revenues for the three months ended June 30, 2009 increased 16% to $170,896,000 compared to $147,918,000 for the same 2008 period. Net income for the three months ended June 30, 2009 increased over 12% to $7,815,000 or $.18 per basic and per diluted common share, compared to the 2008 second quarter net income of $6,953,000 or $.16 per basic and per diluted common share.

The Board of Directors has declared a second quarter 2009 regular quarterly cash dividend of $.19 per common share, payable on August 7, 2009 to shareholders of record at the close of business July 24, 2009. This represents a 6% increase over the dividend declared for the 2009 first quarter and a 27% increase over the 2008 same period payment. It is the 25th consecutive regular quarterly cash dividend payment, as well as the 24th consecutive increase since our initiation of regular quarterly cash dividend payments in 2003.

Hudson City Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ: HCBK,) July 22, 2009 second quarter profit jumped nearly 16% beating the estimates and retaining a significant growth in deposits over the period. However, the increase in net income was shadowed by rising bad loans which have accumulated over the period.

Quarterly earnings of $127.9 million, or $0.26 per share, have easily beaten the year ago result of $110.7 million, or 22 cents per share. Consensus analyst expectations were around 24 cents per share.

During the quarter, Hudson wrote down $32.5 million on loan loss provision charges. The number has increased noticeably since the first quarter 2009, when it summed up to $20 million. In effort to soothing investors, the company's representative pointed out the increase was mainly due to unfavorable economic conditions and rising unemployment.

To offset the losses from non-performing loans, the bank decreased the cost of deposits to 2.43%. Hudson achieved $1.3 billion growth in deposits over the quarter reporting a 17.5% quarter to quarter increase. At the same time the company originated $1.7 billion in new loans and bought $1.2 million of mortgage loans.

In relation to better than expected Q2 results the board of directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.15 per share. The current dividend payout has been increased by 1 cent per share since the previous quarter's payout.

Inergy Holdings GP, LLC (NASDAQ: NRGP) July 27, 2009 announced an increase in its quarterly cash distribution to $0.78 per limited partner unit ($3.12 annually) for the quarter ended June 30, 2009. This represents an approximate 4% increase over the previously declared quarterly distribution of $0.75 per limited partner unit and an approximate 28% increase over the distribution for the same quarter of the prior year.

The distribution will be paid on August 14, 2009, to unitholders of record as of August 7, 2009. [SM]

Kaydon Corporation (NYSE: KDN) July 31, 2009 today announced its results for the second fiscal quarter ended July 4, 2009.

During the second quarter of 2009, sales of friction control products totaled $64.2 million compared to $86.8 million in the prior second quarter. Sales to all major markets, except wind energy, in the first half of 2009 were below the comparable periods of the prior year. Sales to the defense market were below prior year for the quarter and year to date as the prior year's MRAP production and shipments have not thus far been replaced by this year's combined MRAP and M-ATV shipments. The recent awards for the M-ATV program have resulted in orders and will result in shipments in the second half of 2009 with additional potential orders as the program continues to ramp up.

Sales to the wind energy market were $19.8 million in the second quarter of 2009, an increase of $0.6 million compared to the second quarter of 2008. Sales to the wind energy market for the first six months of 2009 increased to $40.7 million, 17 percent higher than the first six months of 2008. While long term policy discussions and legislative proposals centering on reducing carbon emissions and promoting growth in renewable energy alternatives remain positive for the long term, the absence of a well-defined renewable electricity standard on a national basis and ongoing customer issues associated with their accessing the financing markets have impacted both current orders and shipments. The lack of visibility and readily accessible financing has resulted in customers continuing to defer receipt of shipments and to refrain from placing new orders until conditions improve.

Second quarter 2009 friction control products operating income totaled $9.8 million, compared to $22.1 million in the prior second quarter. Results of this segment were affected by lower volumes, adverse changes in product mix, higher pension and depreciation costs, and costs incurred related to labor and other cost reductions.

Sales of velocity control products were $10.2 million in the second quarter of 2009 compared to $20.0 million in the second quarter of 2008, due to reduced demand in all regions and the adverse effects of exchange rate changes. Operating income in the second quarter of 2009 totaled $0.9 million compared to $6.1 million in the second quarter of 2008 due principally to the effects of the lower volume.

Sales of sealing products were $9.6 million in the second quarter of 2009 compared to $11.7 million in the second quarter of 2008, as lower volume was only partially offset by higher pricing. Operating income declined to $0.8 million in the 2009 period due to lower volume and lost absorption in addition to costs associated with the current period's downsizing.
Sales of the Company's remaining businesses equaled $14.3 million during the second quarter of 2009 compared to $21.4 million in the prior second quarter resulting from lower demand for liquid filtration, air filtration, and metal alloy products. Operating income decreased from $3.3 million in the 2008 period to $1.1 million in the 2009 period, due to the lower volumes.

During the second quarter of 2009, the Company paid common stock dividends of $.17 per share or $5.7 million. For the third quarter of 2009, the Company declared a dividend of $.18 per share, payable on October 5, 2009. Dianne Garrett: Calling All Pugs. May 23 "Pugnic"

Prancer and Prunie Garrett

They are short, pudgy, cute, full of personality and love, and snort more than they bark. If you love the Pug breed, you can get your Pug fix on May 23 at Whitehall Community Park during the eleventh annual Ohio Pug Rescue Reunion and Fundraiser, also known at "Pugnic".

The two cute little guys in the photo are my "grand pugs", Prancer and Prunie, who were adopted from OPR by my son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Sabrina Garrett, of Grove City. Prancer, the male, is a little live wire maniac full of energy and bounce. Prunie is female, and loves to do a happy dance with me whenever we see each other. She loves to snuggle.

OPR is a non-profit, all volunteer organization, and 100 percent of all proceeds of the event will benefit OPR. The group offers surrender, foster care and adoption services to all homeless pugs in Ohio, regardless of age, health or condition. Prior to adoption, all animals are spayed/neutered, updated on vaccinations, microchipped for identification, and any health issues are addressed.

Everyone is welcome, and you don't have to have a pug to enjoy the fun. The reunion brings an average of 200-300 pugs in attendance each year. The event runs 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. It is free to OPR members and a $5 donation for non-members. Prizes will be awarded in the Pug contests, which include best costume, best trick, longest tongue, most wrinkles, curliest tail, buggiest eyes and more. There will be over 100 items featured to bid on in the silent auction, as well as a 50/50 raffle, Pennies for Pugs contest, concession stand and bake sale.

Participants can pre-register by logging on to www.ohiopugrescue.com. You will be guaranteed a good time. The park is located at 402 N. Hamilton Road. Prancer, Prunie and I, along with all of their pug friends invite you to the Pugnic. Hope to see you there!

Joanna Tornes Update No. 8 Redoubt volcano.

The past week of activity at the Redoubt volcano was not dramatic. The aviation color code is ORANGE and the alert level WATCH.

A lava dome continues to grow in size within the summit crater. Based on photography and thermal images obtained Friday April 17, the current dome is estimated to be about 500 m (1640 ft) by 700 m (2297 ft) and at least 50 m (160 ft) thick.

Dome growth during the past week was accompanied by intermittent emissions of volcanic gases and minor amounts of ash.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory continues to monitor the situation on a 24/7 schedule.

The last lava explosion during the current eruption occurred on the morning of April 4 (05:55 AKDT).

Since then, seismicity has remained elevated.

Dome growth and occasional rock falls continue.

The vapor and gas cloud rising above the volcano has remained mostly below 15,000 feet above sea level.

Satellite images show thermal anomalies at the summit as well as the low -level plumes and sulfur dioxide clouds drifting away from the volcano.

Pilots have noted occasional sulfur smell down wind.

On Thursday, April 16, AVO field crews repaired a summit seismic station that was destroyed in the March 23 explosion.

They AVO field crew installed a new camera at the AVO hut that has remote zooming capabilities.

AVO geologists sampled material from the last explosive event.

They also investigated the site of a smaller ash and water vapor plume seen intermittently during the last two weeks. This secondary site is down slope from the Rdoubt summit.

Based on the observations of these geologists, it appears that the secondary plume resulted from hot pyroclastic debris falling into a crevasse in glacial ice.

A gas measurement flight was conducted by the AVO on Thursday April 16.

The AVO expects the current Redoubt eruption to continue for weeks and months.

The AVO also predicts that a cycle of relatively quiet periods of lava dome growth will be followed by explosive episodes of dome destruction.

Future explosions pose an ongoing threat of lahars in the Drift River Valley, trace to minor ash fall throughout south-central Alaska, and ash-related impacts to aviation.

This report is based on AVO materials.

John Matuszak interviews Ginny Salamy about Bexley's new community garden

Wednesday April 8, 2009 Eastside News Round up guest was Ginny Salamy, Bexley resident. She was interviewed by John Matuszak about Bexley's new community garden.

Salamy is a member of the Bexley Tree and Public Gardens Commission and she discussed the Bexley community garden project. She said that discussions about establishing a community garden began last year and the garden will be available for planting this growing season.

This will be the first time the city has maintained a community garden where families and individuals can grow vegetables and flowers, she said.

She observed that the community garden that is being developed and offered to the public is more than just flowers. Bexley already has extensive green areas and floral plantings. She said that the community garden will add herbs, vegetables and fruits to the full array of growing things in Bexley public spaces.

The community garden is located off Ferndale and Mayfield Place, north of Livingston.

Garden plots are available in two sizes and prices. 8' X 10' lots are $15.00 for the growing season. Larger plots of 18' X 20' are priced at $30.00.

Salamy said that some Bexley residents who are supporters of the establishment of the community garden will be traveling during planting and growing seasons. These residents have expressed a willingness to pay the ground rent for garden plots and make them available to needy individuals who want to participate in the project.

The City of Bexley will provide the first plowing of the ground and also pay for the water used by gardeners. It is anticipated that the city will also erect a storage structure for its equipment. Some of the storage space might be available to gardeners.

The community garden committee of the tree commission usually meets on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. They are currently giving attention to the layout of the garden, rules for the gardeners and selection of amenities such as flagstone pathways, benches and signage.

The committee meeting for this week will be held on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. so as not to conflict with Passover and Easter events.

Salamy is a native of Brooklyn, New York and came to central Ohio 22 years ago. She is an RN and received a Master's In Landscape Architecture. She developed an appreciation for nature and health during her student years.

Because of the Bexley community garden project she has worked extensively with Bill Dawson of the Franklin Park Conservatory. They have also accepted advice and assistance from the American Community Gardening Association.

Salamy said that the operations of any community garden can be expected to stimulate social interaction between gardeners and also non-gardeners attracted to the outdoor space and the activities of the gardeners. A community garden can also stimulate community development by providing practical use of lands that are otherwise neglected. Other results from a community garden include improving the daily lives (and diets) of the gardeners and adding to the knowledge base of visitors to the garden. Finally, and importantly, a community garden adds to the beauty of a neighborhood.

Beside the individual plantings and cultivation, some formal community activities are planned around the Bexley project. There will be public lectures on organic gardening and health. Other lecture topics will cover herbs, both medicinal and culinary, and cooking with fresh vegetables and herbs. Salamy said that if she can find someone who is knowledgeable about canning fresh vegetables, they will be invited to offer instruction on this art to gardeners.

Salamy said that not everyone in Bexley is wealthy and the community garden will provide a resource for those who are struggling financially.

A garden can provide fresh foods at low-costs and have a positive saving for tight family budgets. Excess harvest can also be sold or given to neighbors. Excess can also be donated to community food banks and community kitchens.

Salamy said that community gardens increase the attention that neighborhoods give to what is happening outdoors. This can have a positive impact on reducing petty crimes and vandalism. Neighbors watch growing plants and report activities that interfere with the gardens to local law enforcement.

Students at Capital University and one local Boy Scout have volunteered on this project. The Boy Scout has volunteered to make some benches for the garden once he locates donated materials and hardware. The college students have volunteered to help on the erection of fences and building of benches. They are currently soliciting donations of materials. Art students from Capital University have also expressed interest in designing signs for the garden. The City is making some supplies and equipment available from the former city nursery.

To contact Ginny Salamy, email Bruce Langner at blangner@bexley.org.

Chuck Gehring: Lifecare Alliance April update

Chuck Gehring, CEO of Lifecare Alliance made his regular visit to the WCRX-LP radio studio. He began his report on programs and services at Lifecare Alliance by commenting on the change of seasons. The pleasures of Spring are enjoyed by Lifecare Alliance clients, volunteers and staff.

DONATE OLD CELL PHONES

He Gehring informed listeners that there is a need for unused and obsolete cell phones that people no longer use. All cell phones are programmed so that 911 calls can still be made on a cell phone even if a specific customer account has been closed. The old cell phones can be used for personal safety of clients and are a suitable no-cost alternative to emergency phone services costing twenty or thirty dollars a month. Lifecare Alliance accepts donations of old cell phones, cleans them and gives them to clients who have a potential need for emergency contact with 911.

SERVICES FOR CANCER AND AIDS PATIENTS

Gehring then discussed services that are offered to cancer patients and individuals with AIDS. A full array of services are available through Lifecare Alliance. The Columbus Cancer Clinic and the Project Open Hand are chiefly identified with Lifecare Alliance cancer and AIDS services.

A profile of some of the clients receiving services through Lifecare Alliance programs is people who have lost their jobs and benefits, who cannot pay for food and medicine, who no longer have the ability to maintain their residences and support their dependents. Sometimes they are facing a year of chemo and other therapy. The treatment is usually debilitating. Travel to medical services is difficult.

Lifecare Alliance can offer meal delivery, pantry assistance, transportation and personal appearances services. A simple objective for the array of services offered by Lifecare Alliance is stabilizing home life and keeping these individuals and their dependents out of homeless shelters

Mammogram and other testing is available from Lifecare Alliance mobile clinics.

Gehring discussed how people commonly delay contact with his agency. For whatever reasons, they delay asking for services. A common pattern that he sees is when the first contact is a “panic contact.” A senior citizen falls; the out of town adult child visits to help during recuperation and first realizes the difficulties the parent has been facing in daily life.

CONTINUED ADVERSE IMPACT OF ECONOMIC CONDITIONS, FEDERAL STIMULUS LEGISLATION

Gehring also discussed the continuing problems of job lay-offs, limited employment opportunities, tight public budgets, and reduced charitable donations.

The federal stimulus legislation is important in addressing these problems. He said that Lifecare Alliance has submitted seven proposals for program funding under the stimulus legislation. He also cautioned that there is a lot of competition for the limited funding. He said that there are already twenty-two thousand funding requests from central Ohio.

Gehring said that implementing the stimulus legislation has not begun. It is not clear who will be making decisions on which proposals are acceptable.

Listeners who are interested in particular issues should pay attention to developments. They should write letters of support to their senators and representatives and, once the administrative decision-makers are identified letters of support should be addressed to them too.

Detailed information is available at the websites of the members of the Ohio Congressional delegation. For Bexley residents he listed the websites for Representatives Tiberi and Mary Jo Kilroy and Senators George Voinovich and Sherrod Brown.
As an additional way to get a lot of detailed information on the stimulus legislation, Gehring reminded listeners to simply google the two words “federal stimulus.”

BASEBALL TICKETS AND SENIOR PROMS

Gehring said that he has learned that some high school seniors are inviting senior citizens to proms. Dancing is a simple pleasure that many seniors enjoy. Even without dancing, participating in a formal party is a pleasure that can be enjoyed.

He also reminded listeners that Spring is the start of baseball season. Seniors always welcome visits to the baseball parks. And this year, the Clippers have the new Huntington stadium. If someone has unused baseball tickets, think of a neighbor, a senior citizen who might enjoy a night out at the ball park. Chuck also said that if any baseball tickets are donated to Lifecare Alliance, the tickets will be provided to deserving fans for a day at the ball park.

Joanna Tornes Update No. 6 on Redoubt volcano eruption.

Redoubt volcano erupted Saturday morning just before 6:00 a.m. ADT. Anchorage Daily News reported this as the biggest eruption to date.

Ash emissions reached 50,000 feet high.

Flood waters surged in the Drift River and flooded the oil terminal. The Coast Guard reported that the flood waters will interfere with measures planned to protect the flow of oil through the terminal.

The Weather Service issued an ashfall alert for the western Kenai Peninsula and residents reported that significant amounts of ash fell in Homer, Nikiski, Clam Gulch, Seldovia and elsewhere in that area of the Peninsula.

Anchorage Daily News quoted one resident of Homer that she had almost a quarter inch of ash on the hood of her truck.

Joanna Tornes Update No. 3 on Redoubt volcano eruption

Wednesday. New photos of Redoubt volcano. One hundred forty five photos of Redoubt volcano eruption and ash fall are available at ADN.COM, the Anchorage Daily News website.

As of Tuesday the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) reported continuous emissions of steam, volcanic gases, and minor amounts of ash continue at Redoubt.

These emissions have been generally been at low altitudes (less than 15,000 feet above sea level), but occasionally rise as high as 25,000 feet above sea level. Satellite images from taken Tuesday morning show a broad layer of volcanic haze extending east of the volcano over the Kenai Peninsula, the Anchorage Bowl, and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Satellite images from last night show a thermal anomaly at the vent and are possibly due to the extrusion of a lava dome in the summit crater. Seismicity consists of volcanic tremor and occasional discrete earthquakes.

Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) and Anchorage Daily News (ADN) report that the alert level remains "red" as a warning. Low-level ash and steam continued at Mount Redoubt on Tuesday.

As Redoubt volcano simmered and sputtered on low Tuesday, the Drift River oil terminal downriver continued to pose challenging questions for its owner and government officials over the millions of gallons of crude oil stored there, and when operations could resume.

Tuesday, Alaska Airline cancelled night flights to and from Anchorage.

Increased concern about oil operations, particularly at the Drift River terminal facility. Storage capacity is limited. No discussion of the impact on oil prices of the disruption of oil supply that results from the Redoubt eruptions.

Anchorage Daily News quotes several scientists who describe Tuesday as a calm day for Mount Redoubt. The same scientists are quoted that they expect further volcanic activity.

The newspaper also reported that there is a haze in the sky from the volcanic ash. Government officials are quoted that the haze is not dangerous.
