Laura Franks reports the Bexley Consumer Price Index as of Second Quarter, 2014.

The Bexley CPI reports on the aggregate prices paid for a uniform basket of merchandise purchased at retail in Bexley and nearby retail stores.

The Bexley CPI measures the change of prices for ordinary retail purchases made by Bexley residents.

The Bexley Consumer Price Index can be compared to the price changes reported by the US Department of Labor.  The comparison can provide useful information for Bexley consumers about local price changes compared to price changes in other parts of the United States.

For the Second Quarter, 2014, the total cost of the standard market basket was $20.89.  Compared to the total market basket for the First Quarter, 2014, ($20.44) this is a $0.45 increase or stated as a percentage, a 2.5% increase.  Year-to-year comparison for the Second Quarters, 2013 and 2014 are $21.43 for 2013 and $20.89 for 2014, or a decrease of 0.54%.  As a year-over-year comparison, this is a  0.56% decrease.

Nothing exciting.

Looking at price changes for specific market-basket items, one home-office item showed a quarter-to-quarter decline of $0.58 and a common paper item showed an increase of $1.00 in its price.  This increase was attributable to an in-store coupon offered in the First Quarter 2013.

This has been a wonderful Spring in Bexley and retail prices in this little municipality are pretty stable.

This is Laura Franks reporting the Bexley Consumer Price Index for the fourth quarter, 2010.

The Bexley CPI reports on the aggregate prices paid for a uniform basket of merchandise purchased at retail in Bexley, Ohio and nearby retail stores.

The Bexley CPI measures the change of prices for typical retail purchases made by Bexley residents.

The Bexley Consumer Price Index can be compared to the price changes reported by the Bureau of Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor. The comparison can provide useful information for Bexley consumers about local price changes compared to price changes in other parts of the United States.

As of the fourth quarter, 2010, compared to the third quarter, 2010, Bexley prices showed a 10% decrease. This decrease was the result of two factors. First: one item was marked down a very significant 50%. Second: one item that was discounted last quarter was returned to a pre-sale cost which was actually 9% lower than it had been during the previous two quarters. In other words, the store had lowered the baseline price of this item without marking it as a sale item.

Of note: the total cost of the market basket for this quarter was the lowest of quarters during 2010.

Once again with retail prices like this, I definitely conclude that it is always nice to live in Bexley..

Hanukah Hop at JCC opens season festivities.

The annual Hanukah Hop was held Sunday December 13 at JCC. Kriss Galloway reports that the new J Zone was a featured facility and was alive with children's energy. Children were using their energy by playing on "Dance, Dance Revolution" mats. These children were among the first to test some of the Exergames planned for installation at the J Zone. This is a new indoor fun fitness area at the JCC.

The event was also the beginning of the Children Capital and Endowment Campaign designed to serve the next generation of preschool and elementary aged children with a variety of cutting edge fitness, play and interactive gaming equipment and programs.

Kriss also reported that hundreds of community members attended the Hanukah Hop, hosted by the JCC, Columbus Torah Academy and Columbus Jewish Day School, the preschools at Congregation Agudas Achim, Beth Jacob Congregation, and Temple Israel, and the P2K Young Partners Group of the Columbus Jewish Federation.

Kriss offered recognition to Circuit Wellness owner Polly Benson for providing the ExerGame equipment.

Additional activities at the Hop included a dreidel spinning contest, Hanukah bingo, Hanukah arts and crafts, e-cards to Israel, Hanukah stories, dramatic interpretations, balloon animals, jumpees, basketball, Exer-Gaming, foosball, air hockey, Xbox games, and billiards.

Delegado de Obama tropieza en gira por Latinoamérica

En su primera gira por Latinoamérica el enviado a la zona por la administración Obama, Arturo Valenzuela, tropezó en Argentina al entrevistarse con Aníbal Fernández el jefe del gabinete. El desliz fue cuando Valenzuela habló francamente de la deuda impagada por parte de Argentina al gobierno de Estados Unidos además de las preocupaciones de empresarios norteamericanos por la estabilidad jurídica de la nación sudamericana. Tales declaraciones levantaron pollas y decepcionaron a no pocos de los que esperaban un nuevo capítulo positivo en las relaciones entre EEUU y América Latina tras la llegada de Obama a la presidencia y la nominación de Valenzuela, el cual es de origen chileno, al puesto de delegado a la región.

Guerrillas se unen contra el gobierno de Uribe en Colombia

Dos grupos revolucionarios colombianos las FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia y el ELN (Ejército de Liberación Nacional) anunciaron que se unirán para hacer un nuevo frente común en contra del gobierno de Uribe en vez de enfrentarse entre ellos. Las dos guerrillas, de tendencias ideológicas dispares, cuentan con unos 14.000 combatientes entre sus filas y han hecho esta nueva alianza impulsadas en parte por el acuerdo firmado hace unos meses entre Bogotá y Washington que permite el uso de bases militares en suelo colombiano por parte de tropas norteamericanas. Empero, el ejército colombiano se ha mostrado escéptico frente a las noticias debido a disputas que mantienen ambos grupos por el control del narcotráfico en la zona.

Se propone nueva reforma migratoria
(A new immigration reform is proposed)

El representante por Illinois en la cámara de diputados de Estados Unidos, Luis Gutiérrez, acaba de promover una nueva ley sobre la inmigración que pretenderá reformar el proceso migratorio además de legalizar unos 12 millones de indocumentados. La medida, que se entitula Reforma Migratoria Integral 2009 para la Seguridad y la Prosperidad de Estados Unidos (CIRASAP) tiene el apoyo, entre otros grupos progresistas, de las bancadas hispana, asiática y afroamericana. Según la ley, el inmigrante que quiera naturalizarse tendrá que mantener una presencia continua en Estados Unidos, demostrar una contribucción al país en materia de empleo, educación, o servicio militar, además de someterse a una revisión de precedentes penales y una multa en la cantidad de 500 dólares. También habrá penales serios e incluso 5 años de cárcel para los que falsifiquen su documentación para ingresar en el programa.

Ecuador y Europa firman acuerdo sobre el comercio del banano
(Ecuador and Europe sign agreement on banana trade)

Tras diez años de disputas, la nación sudamericana del Ecuador y La Unión Europea acaban de firmar un acuerdo que regula la exportación de bananos. En concreto, el Acuerdo de Ginebra sobre el Comercio de Banano bajará los aranceles impuestos por el nuevo régimen europeo en 2006 que perjudicaron seriamente la industria bananera ecuatoriana. Lo que es más, bajo las nuevas regulaciones pequeños y medianos productores ecuatorianos tendrán mayor acceso al mercado europeo. Además de Europa, Ecuador ha podido negociar condiciones favorables a la exportación de frutos tropicales a otros países desarrollados como Australia, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Islandia, Suiza, Japón, Noruega, y Nueva Zelandia.

Disturbios en Buenos Aires

Cinco policías resultaron heridos tras un enfrentamiento con estudiantes en la capital argentina de Buenos Aires. Centenares de estudiantes, matriculados en la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) y miembros de la Federación Universitaria de Buenos Aires (FUBA), protestaban la reelección del rector Rubén Hallú y luego apedrearon al cuerpo policial que se mandó para apaciguarles. En cuanto al motivo de la protesta, un miembro del profesorado de la misma universidad alegó que la asamblea que eligió a Hallú se había convocado en la más absoluta ilegalidad y en contra de los estatutos universitarios.

Crisis política en la derecha salvadoreña

El partido salvadoreño de derechas, ARENA (Alianza Republicana Nacionalista) acaba de expulsar al ex-presidente Antonio Saca de sus filas por manipular el proceso que acabó en la selección del candidato Rodrigo Ávila, el cual fue derrotado por el izquierdista Mauricio Funes en las últimas elecciones presidenciales, dando fin a 20 años de hegemonía de la ARENA en el país centroamericano. De hecho, la expulsión de Saca es fruto de una lucha interna que se está dando ahora en la derecha salvadoreña a raíz de su estatus debilitado como parte de la oposición y justamente en estos momentos se está en busca de un chivo expiatorio, papel que le cuadra al ex-presidente debido a la difícil posición política que ahora vive el partido.

Candidato de la oposición chilena: un paso de la presidencia
(Chilean conservative opposition candidate one step from the presidency)

Sebastián Piñera, un empresario millionario y el candidato de la oposicón conservadora acaba de ganar un 44,05 % de los votos en las elecciones presidenciales en Chile el pasado domingo, resultado que le puede dar la presidencia. Sin embargo, al no lograr una mayoría absoluta, Piñera tendrá que esperar hasta un balotaje que se celebrará el 17 de enero en que se enfrentará con el ex-presidente Frei, candidato del partido centro-izquierda de la actual presidenta Bachelet, el cual le sigue en el número de votos. En concreto, Frei capturó un 29,06 % del voto frente al independiente que ganó 20,11 %, seguido por el el ex-ministro Jorge Arrate que sólo quedó con 6,21 %. Es más, si el magnate Piñera llega a ganar la segunda vuelta pondrá fin a unos 20 años de gobierno centro-izquierda del país, tras la dictadura de Pinochet.

Se reanuda el diálogo entre Ecuador y Colombia
(Ecuador and Colombia reopen dialog)

El intermediario entre Ecuador y Colombia, Andrés Terán, ve con optimismo el reestablecimiento de relaciones entre los dos países que se rompieron en marzo de 2008. La ruptura se dio tras el bombardeo del ejército colombiano de un campamento de las FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) que se situaba en territorio ecuatoriano. Terán agregó que el diálogo avanza bien y que muy pronto se reanudarán relaciones diplomáticas entre las dos naciones sudamericanas tras finalizar una investigación que pretende aclarar las acciones de las fuerzas armadas colombianas además de presuntos vínculos de ex-funcionarios del gobierno ecuatoriano con las FARC.

Laura Franks. What is the market value for California script in Bexley?

The State of California ran out of cash in July and used “script” to pay its bills. State employees, third party vendors and service providers received pieces of paper that look like checks as payment of wages and invoices. Although called “script,” and “California IOUs” the papers are more properly called “warrants.”

Warrants are one official instructing another official to do something within their authority as officials. An arrest warrant is a judge telling a law enforcement officer to take someone into custody. The California warrants are the state controller telling the state treasurer to pay money on a particular future date. In this case the date is about two months in the future.



Some California banks, Wells Fargo and Bank of America are the most prominent examples, accept the warrants for deposit into checking and savings account. Some banks are accepting the warrants but discounting the face amount of the warrant by two or three percent. The discount represents an interest charge by the bank for the time the script is unpaid by California.

The California script is due on October 2, 2009 and carries an annual interest rate of 3.75 percent.

Speculators are offering to buy the script at discounts on Craigslist. There are internet exchanges where holders of the warrants can offer them for sale. One of these exchanges is the creation of Brandon Schlichter who is a resident of Columbus.

Does this California script have any value in Bexley? Will Bexley restaurants and other retail establishments accept the California script as a form of payment. To find out Bexley Public Radio called three Bexley restaurants: The Top, Bexley Monk and Guiseppes Ritrova. Bexley Public Radio also posed the question to the home offices of Walgreens and CVS, two national chain drug stores serving the Bexley community. Both Walgreens and CVS have retail stores in California.

The manager at The Top Restaurant said unequivocally that they “can’t accept” the script as payment.

The host at Bexley Monk left the question open but said that none of the California script had been presented and then, as an after thought, said that he didn’t think it was likely that anyone would offer the script as a form of payment. We take this response as a polite “non.”

The position of Giuseppe’s Ritrova was also unequivocal about the California script. The host said that “we won’t accept it.”

As to the drug stores, emails were sent to the home offices asking whether California script would be accepted in payment for purchases at the East Broad Street Walgreens location and the East Main Street location of CVS.

Neither home office has replied to the email. After five days of no response, we are taking the silence as “no.”

CONCLUSION. California script has zero value in Bexley.

The credit score of California seems to be below one hundred and fifty points in our Midwestern paradise.

Members of the board of education who were present for the public meeting were Diane Peterson, Andy Sutter, Joan Fishel, Steve Grossman and Craig Halliday.

Bexley, Ohio. Kriss Galloway discusses scheduled events at Jewish Community Center.

Communications Director Kriss Galloway of the Jewish Community Center of Columbus, Ohio was interviewed by WCRX-LP station manager John Manning. The interview included descriptions of two premiere events, a number of events for senior citizens and other events for teenagers.

The first event discussed by Kriss Galloway was the JCC Juried Member Art Exhibit.

Amateur and professional artists have the opportunity to showcase their talents this fall at the JCC Juried Member Art Exhibit. This is the first juried art exhibit at the JCC.

An independent juror is being selected by the JCC art committee. The juror will be a recognized arts community figure who is not a JCC member. The juror will select the individual art works for display.

JCC members may submit up to two pieces of their artwork for consideration.

Artwork may be dropped off at the JCC’s front desk for consideration for the exhibit on Tuesday, September 18 and Wednesday, September 19, from 4 to 8 p.m.

All types of artistic media are welcome, and must be ready for display.

The artwork selected will be placed on exhibit in the JCC lobby from Sunday, October 7 through Sunday, November 4.

Galloway then discussed another new event at the JCC. Next Sunday, September 9, the inaugural “Pooch Pond” will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in the JCC’s outdoor pool.

After the JCC’s outdoor pool is closed for the day, canine friends of JCC members will have a chance to have the run of the place for an afternoon.

Admission is $5 per dog.

Galloway reminded listeners that Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown, Wednesday, September 12 and that the JCC building will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, and remain closed for the Jewish New Year on Thursday and Friday, September 13 and 14. The JCC will reopen on Saturday, September 15, at 1:30 p.m.

During the holiday, JCC Chef Tony can prepare a meal of Va’ad supervised kosher poached salmon, brisket, chicken or a salad for members. Contact to order kosher meals is Tina Rice at (614) 559-6276.

Galloway also discussed Communiteen High School and the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School.

Communiteen allows teens in grades 9 through 12 to explore faith, values, ethics and Jewish history through current events and contemporary thinking. Classes for both programs begin on Sunday, September 16.

The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School is a two-year program that presents a comprehensive Judaic curriculum ranges from the Jewish life cycle to Jewish ethics and history.

The views of Reform, Conservative and Orthodox Judaism are presented in a comfortable setting that encourages discussions, questions and exploration.

“Jerry’s Girls,” is the opening production of the 2007-2008 Gallery Players’ season. The musical has been cast and rehearsals are underway.

Cast members include Gallery Players’ veterans Susan Bunsold, Wendy Cohen, Eileen Howard and Julie Russell. Making their Gallery Players’ debut will be Dawn Farrell and Danielle Mann, as well as newcomers Octavia Bogan and Ashley Parizek.

A brief review of events for senior was also provided by Galloway. She began by noting that JCC provides transportation for events within a 10 mile radius, and that events are open to participants who are not Jewish.

The Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans will give a presentation Friday, September 7. The program is free and open to everyone age 60 and older.

The New Horizons 60+ seniors group will tour the Ohio Governor’s Residence and Heritage Garden on Tuesday, September 11. The tour bus will depart the JCC at 9:30 a.m., and the docent-guided walking tour will take a little over an hour. There is a fee of $5 for JCC members and $6 for non-members.

Tuesday – and every Tuesday during the school year – line dancing, taught by Mary Bova-Ervin, takes place at the JCC from 1 to 2 p.m.

Galloway also discussed “Get to know your voting machine,” a presentation by Howard Heard of the Franklin County Board of Elections, on Monday, September 24 at 11:15 a.m. This program also is free and open to everyone.

Homer, Alaska. Joanna Tornes signs on as WCRX-LP culture correspondent.

September Alaska culture dispatch from Homer, Alaska.

WCRX-LP programming for today included a live dispatch from WCRX-LP Alaska culture correspondent Joanna Tornes.

Joanna Tornes discussed a local sustainability conference in Homer, Alaska and the art gallery walk scheduled for this weekend.

She also discussed the need for local passenger rail service to smaller Alaska communities such as Homer.

The Alaska culture correspondent was interviewed by WCRX-LP program host Joe Contino and Troy Paton.

Joanna Tornes is a Bexley native who has migrated to Alaska. She returns to Bexley regularly where she is a welcomed raconteur and chanteuse in many Bexley cultural salons.

Joanna Tornes is under contract with WCRX-LP 102.1 FM, Local Power Radio to provide regular monthly culture reports on cultural affairs and civic events in Homer, Alaska.
