For the Second Quarter, 2014, the total cost of the standard market basket was $20.89.  Compared to the total market basket for the First Quarter, 2014, ($20.44) this is a $0.45 increase or stated as a percentage, a 2.5% increase.  Year-to-year comparison for the Second Quarters, 2013 and 2014 are $21.43 for 2013 and $20.89 for 2014, or a decrease of 0.54%.  As a year-over-year comparison, this is a  0.56% decrease.

Nothing exciting.

Looking at price changes for specific market-basket items, one home-office item showed a quarter-to-quarter decline of $0.58 and a common paper item showed an increase of $1.00 in its price.  This increase was attributable to an in-store coupon offered in the First Quarter 2013.

This has been a wonderful Spring in Bexley and retail prices in this little municipality are pretty stable.

Laura Franks reports the Bexley Consumer Price Index as of First Quarter, 2014.

Bexley retail prices were steady during the first quarter, 2014.  Prices for the entire market-basket showed a five cent change compared to prices for the first quarter 2013.  Looking back five years the market-basket total prices have generally increased.  The market-basket in 2010 cost a total of $18.86.  Compared to the total price in the first quarter of this year, was $20.44.  For the total five year period, the rate of price increases is 8 %.  The most active price changes during the five year period are paper products and packaged candy.

Comparing current prices to prices for the first quarter, 2012, Bexley prices showed a year-to-year increase of 7.74 percent.for the aggregate cost of the uniform market basket.  The quarter-to-quarter aggregate cost also showed an increase at the rate of 8.51 percent.

Price changes appeared in the amount of sales tax paid, the price of home-office supplies and the price of one personal hygiene product.  The increase in actual sales tax paid is a consequence of the increase in retail prices paid.

As of the second quarter, 2012 compared to the first quarter, 2012, Bexley prices showed no change to the aggregate cost of the uniform market basket.  An interesting note to the prices is that one item that was on sale during the first quarter, continues to be offered by the retailer as a sale item.  The unit size of the item has also decreased twice during the last year and a half.  Even controlling for changes in unit size prices remained steady during the second quarter.

With retail prices holding steady, life in Bexley is nice.

This is Laura Franks reporting the Bexley Consumer Price Index for the third quarter, 2010.

The Bexley CPI reports on the aggregate prices paid for a uniform basket of merchandise purchased at retail in Bexley and nearby retail stores.

The Bexley CPI measures the change of prices for typical retail purchases made by Bexley residents.

The Bexley Consumer Price Index can be compared to the price changes reported by the Bureau of Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor. The comparison can provide useful information for Bexley consumers about local price changes compared to price changes in other parts of the United States.

As of the third quarter, 2010 compared to the second quarter, 2010, Bexley prices showed a 6% increase. Although there was a significant 31% markdown on one (1) item (a back-to-school item) the overall increase was the result of two (2) items having their prices raised, and a third item that was discounted 41% last quarter was returned to its pre-sale cost.

Of note: this is the highest total cost we’ve seen since the inception of the Bexley CPI in October 2007. The highest total previously was in the first quarter of this year.

Even though we have an increase in prices this quarter I still conclude that it is always nice to live in Bexley.

As of the first quarter, 2010 compared to the fourth quarter, 2009, Bexley prices showed an 11% increase. Of the three(3) items that were discounted last quarter, two(2) were returned to their pre-sale cost and the other item, although still on a markdown had actually had its sale price raised 26%.

Laura Franks reported that most Bexley retail prices in her standard market basket are unchanged for the second quarter, 2009. Nonetheless, because of the recorded prices of two items, her consumer price index showed an overall price decline for the quarter.

As of the second quarter, 2009 compared to the first quarter, 2009, Bexley prices showed a marked decrease of 10.70%. This decline is attributable to two factors. One is a significant 29% markdown on one(1) personal hygiene item. The second factor is the result of a stationery item being out of stock and having to replace it with the same product, but in a smaller size, and therefore priced at $1.00 less than the regular market basket item.

Even if the regular stationery item had been available at its first quarter price, we still would have had a little over 5% decrease in Bexley retail prices.

Except for these two(2) items, the prices on the remainder of the market basket purchases stayed the same as the first quarter 2009.

Laura Franks releases her Bexley Consumer Price Index report. Retail prices are stable.

March 5, 2009. Laura Franks reported today that retail prices in Bexley , Ohio are "stable."

In her quarterly report prepared for Bexley Public Radio, Laura said that prices for the 1st quarter 2009 compared to 4th quarter 2008 are essentially unchanged. She noted that the small change of 0.62 percent is identical to the slight decline of 0.62 percent reported for the 1st quarter, 2008.

Based on the prices in her uniform market-basket of purchases, she said that as a practical matter, there is no change in the price level for Bexley consumers. Prices are stable.

Yet more on Laura Frank’s Bexley Consumer Price Index.

In Laura Frank’s Bexley CPI radio report last week, she described the price of one item of school supplies as declining a “whopping” eighty-three percent (83%).

After her report was completed, Laura was asked whether “whopping” is a technical term in finance and economics.

She laughed and said “Of course it is.”

Well, once again Laura is right on the money.

In an article in this week’s Wednesday Financial Times there is an article on wholesale price inflation by James Politi.

The article quotes Kenneth Rogoff, a Harvard University professor and former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund about the recent failures of some financial institutions

“We’re not just going to see mid-sized banks go under in the next few months, we’re going to see a whopper, we’re going to see a big one, one of the big investment banks or big banks”

So, Laura is right. The word “whopper” is a technical term used by economists and financiers.

More thoughts on deflation of Bexley retail prices.

Last Tuesday, Laura Franks reported the Bexley Consumer Price Index for the Third Quarter, 2008. The report announced a seven percent (7%) quarter-to-quarter reduction in retail prices.

This deflationary result was attributable to steep discounting in stationery and back-to-school supplies.

Because major media have been reporting inflationary signs, listeners and also radio staff were surprised by the deflation reported by the Bexley CPI.

But facts are facts. The Bexley CPI reported what the retail prices are. And those prices demonstrate a decline in local retail prices. If WCRX-LP, 102.1 FM is out of step with other media, we accept that and report the facts as we find them.

By coincidence other media are starting to see some deflationary signs. One columnist in the Financial Times, sees more than signs of deflation.

In his Wednesday August 13, 2008 column, John Authers Financial Times columnist begins “The deflationists have it. All year long, the debate has raged over whether the world faces a greater risk from resurgent inflation or from deflation to match Japan in the 1990s. The sudden fall in commodity prices has, for now, convinced the market that we need not worry about inflation.”


Authers column is “The Short View” and he concludes yesterday’s column by observing “In the longer term, deflation is bad news for almost everyone. It implies a global slowdown rather than the vision of emerging markets growing, and pulling up prices in their wake…But the US consumer staples prosper in this scenario. They produce lots of cash in dollars and are not too vulnerable to a recession.”

Entering the third quarter of calendar year 2008, Bexley retail prices declined at the rate of seven percent (7%).

In the exclusive feature produced for Bexley Public Radio, Laura Franks made the surprising report in her Tuesday broadcast on 102.1 FM.

The price data reported by Laura Franks on Tuesday surprised WCRX-LP staff and management and was not what they expected based on general news reports about the economy and the forecasts of media pundits.

As reported by Franks for the third quarter, 2008, Bexley retail prices for a standard market basket of purchases showed a seven percent (7%) decline compared to the second quarter, 2008.

Franks attributed this decline to special sale prices for back-to-school supplies that are included in the market basket. One item of school supplies was discounted an amazing eighty-three percent (83%) from its second quarter price.

Some items reflected pricing increases. Notably, two beverage items in the market basket recorded small price increases.

Personal hygiene items also showed modest price increases.

These price increases were slight compared to the significant discounting for stationery and school supplies.

The result of the steep discounting is that the quarter-to-quarter change in retail prices for Bexley is a seven percent (7%) price decline for the entire market basket.

Bexley radio station WCRX-LP, 102.1 FM launches the Bexley Consumer Price Index (Bexley CPI).

Laura Franks presented the premier Bexley Consumer Price Index report for the first quarter, 2008.

The Bexley CPI reports the aggregate of the prices of a uniform market basket of merchandise purchased at retail in Bexley, Ohio. The report also includes quarter to quarter changes in the retail prices of the standard market basket.

The Bexley CPI can be compared to the changes reported for other goods and services reported by the Bureau of Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor.

As of the first quarter, 2008 compared to the fourth quarter, 2007, Bexley retail prices showed a slight decline. The statistical measurement of this slight decline is 0.62 percent or a little less than two-thirds of one percent.

This slight decline is attributable to the reduction in the shelf price of a single item.

The price of a second item in effect was also reduced in the first quarter, 2008 although the effective price change did not change the aggregate price of the Bexley market basket. This second item was on sale during the fourth quarter, 2007. During the first quarter, 2008 the shelf price of this second item was reduced to the same level as the coupon price of the prior quarter.

Because two items showed reduction in shelf price, the Bexley CPI is treating retail Bexley prices as showing a slight downward movement.

WCRX-LP announced that its first report on retail prices in Bexley, Ohio will be aired on the Thursday, February 21, 2008 broadcast at 102.1 FM.

Laura Franks, WCRS-LP programming chairwoman and station statistician, will present the first consumer price report. She said that the Bexley CPI is designed to permit listeners to evaluate changes in retail prices in Bexley, Ohio in comparison to national data reported by the Bureau of Statistics, U. S. Department of Labor.

Radio station manager John Manning said that WCRX-LP has established a market basket of common items purchased at retail in Bexley. Price data has been collected for the fourth quarter, 2007 and the first quarter, 2008. The report is based on a comparison of price data for these two time periods.

STUDENT RADIO STATION INTERNSHIPS. A comparison of how two universities pay attention to opportunities for their students to acquire radio skills and very practical broadcast experience.


WCRX-LP, 102.1 FM, Local Power Radio has requested assistance from two local post-secondary educational institutions to offer radio internships to their students. WCRX-LP, 102.1 FM is the community radio service of Bexley, Ohio.

The first school was contacted on Thursday August 2. Since then two representatives have acknowledged the request. One referred WCRX-LP to a faculty member. The professor acknowledged the request and has not otherwise responded. This offer appears pretty much to be dead in the water unless WCRX-LP makes addtional effort.

The second school was contacted on Monday August 13 and responded on the same day with instructions for posting the notice at the school.

Here is the proposal made to each school.

The proposal is a list of existing and proposed radio programs on WCRX-LP, !02.1 FM, Local Power Radio that can provide broadcast experience for students. Both production and on-air broadcast experience are offered to students by WCRX-LP, 102.1 FM, Local Power Radio.

Some of the business and finance productions might be of particular interest to students in business and economics courses.

WCRX-LP broadcasts each week day from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

WCRX-LP is an affiliate of Pacifica Foundation in Berkeley California.

In the event there is student interest in these intern opportunities, WCRX-LP can expand its hours in accordance with the time-share agreement.

WCRX-LP, 102.1 FM, Local Power Radio is also interested in learning what students will need to do to be eligible for class credit if they participate in any of these intern opportunities.

Auction market report. Aired five to twenty minutes daily. Production time is four hours weekly. This program is currently broadcast. Collect, edit and script sale schedules, auction lot information, hammer prices, and consignment schedules from Sotheby’s and Christie’s New York auction rooms; Leslie Hindman;s Chicago sales room and from central Ohio auctions. Interview (usually by telephone) auctioneers for human interest aspects of individual auctions; collect market condition and price information from auctioneers about individual auctions. Amy Maurer’s “Lunchtime gardener.” Twice weekly forty minute program on Bexley gardens. Production time is five hours weekly. This program is currently broadcast. Production assistant. Make arrangements for guest interviews. Research on food and gardening topics.

Bexley community calendar. Aired five to twenty minutes daily. Production time is four hours weekly. This program is currently broadcast. Collect, edit and script information about events in and around Bexley. Read script and ad lib comment.

Ethnic grocery market reports; farmers market reports and organic fruits and vegetables market reports. This is a proposed program. It is not currently broadcast. Collect, edit and script information on ethnic groceries serving east Columbus neighborhoods: e.g. Guatemalan, Mexican, Salvadoran, Mideast (Arab), Jewish, Somali and Liberian. Interview market managers on regular schedule as to new shipments. Same with local farmers and organic markets. Read script and ad lib comment.

Joe Contino Show. Aired one hour on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Production time is five hours each week. This program is currently broadcast. Production assistant. Make arrangements for guest interviews. Research on local sports and political topics. Work with sports reporters for community newspapers and local coaches.

News, local government and politics reporting. Twenty minutes to one hour five days a week. Production time is six hours a week. This program is currently broadcast. Collect, edit and script Bexley area news. Read script and ad lib comment. Read news reports from The New Standard, Bexley News, The Catholic Times and Eastside Messenger.

Local CPI (Consumer Price Index). This is a proposed program. It is not currently broadcast. Collect and analyze local consumer price information. Contrast with national CPI numbers. Script for monthly broadcast. Read script.

Kate Buckley’s “Readings from Children’s Literature.” This is aired twenty minutes three days a week. Production time is two hours a week. This program is currently broadcast. Assist on-air personality in getting copyright permissions, back ground information on authors and illustrators and scripting summaries of stories and production breaks.

CD interest paid report for the Bexley Financial District. Three to five minutes twice a week. Production time is three hours each week. This program is currently broadcast. Analyze and script interest rate information from the ten banks in Bexley Financial District Read script.

Recorded music, live music and interviews with musicians. This is a proposed group of programs. WCRX-LP does not currently broadcast any music programming. DJ programs.

Culture correspondent reports. Five to ten minutes of postcards from culture correspondents in Alaska, California, Colorado and West Virginia. Four times each month. Production time is one hour a week. This program is currently broadcast. Schedule time for call-in from correspondents. Script outline. Occasional brief on-air introductions.

Sports programming. This is a proposed group of programs. Live coverage. Interviews with coaches, sports reporters and athletes. On-air work as sports event announcer.
