The green radio choice: Bexley Public Radio.

Green. The public radio green choice is still WCRX-LP, 102.1 FM. Celebrate the lower energy requirements for LPFM.

Big power blasters like WOSU and WCBE consume lots of energy. These big stations have gluttonous appetites for anthracite.

WOSU alone engorges itself on almost a shovel full of coal every eighteen minutes of broadcast.

Think WOSU. Think coal. Think pollution.

Reflect on WCRX-LP. Visualize low energy use. Know that Bexley Public Radio means responsible stewardship of energy resources.

To know green, think Bexley Public Radio.

HELP BEXLEY PUBLIC RADIO UPGRADE ITS ANTENNA. SEND YOUR MONEY PROMPTLY. BE GENEROUS.

(Mexican authorities detain more than 15 assassins in the state of Morelos)

Nicaragua detiene cuatro embarcaciones colombianas

(Nicaragua detains four Colombian vessels)

(New app for the iPhone: iFranco)

Fallece Carlos Franqui, activista cubano

(Cuban activist Carlos Franqui dies)

(Venezuela on list of human rights violators)

Trinity Lutheran Seminary co-sponsors presentation Wednesday evening, April 21, 2010 at Pontifical College Josephinum by Rabbi David Fox Sandmel

Faith in the Public Square
7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Jessing Center at the Pontifical College Josephinum
7625 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio

Rabbi and Scholar to address Faith in the Public Square

Trinity Lutheran Seminary co-sponsors this annual event with The Pontifical College Josephinum and the Methodist Theological School in Ohio.

Rabbi David Fox Sandmel, Crown-Ryan Professor of Jewish Studies at the Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, will speak to “Faith in the Public Square,” at 7 p.m. in the Jessing Center on the Josephinum campus, 7625 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio. The lecture is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are requested. Please contact Sandy Antes by April 15 at 614-985-2497 or santes@pcj.edu .

Rabbi Sandmel offers a penetrating look at the uniquely American debate about one of the country's founding principles, religious freedom. Understood by grade school students, this simple idea, adopted as part of the American experiment, has proved to be challenging to generations of theological scholars, legal minds and social critics.

Religious diversity of America increases under the principle of religious freedom, both the Holocaust and 9/11 confirm. Interfaith dialogues provide a model and a methodology for understanding the challenge of religious freedom in a complicated civic and intellectual environment.

Rabbi Sandmel received his undergraduate degree in Jewish Studies from The Ohio State University and was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati. He completed his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied the history and literature of Judaism and Christianity in the Greco-Roman world.

As director of the National Jewish Scholars Project, Rabbi Sandmel coordinated the publication of “Dabru Emet: A Jewish Statement on Christians and Christianity,” which generated international attention in the interfaith community and wide media coverage. He is the co-editor of Christianity in Jewish Terms and the lead editor of Irreconcilable Differences? A Learning Resource for Jews and Christians (both from Westview Press).

Rabbi Sandmel is also involved in Jewish-Muslim dialogue and tri-lateral dialogue among Jews, Christians, and Muslims. He is a member of Rabbis and Imams for Peace and team teaches a course on the Abrahamic faiths with a Roman Catholic and an Imam at the Catholic Theological Union. Rabbi Sandmel is also a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR). He chairs the CCAR’s Committee on Interfaith Activities and is the CCAR Representative to the Joint Commission on Interfaith Relations (with the Union for Reform Judaism), the National Council of Synagogues, and the International Jewish Committee on Interfaith Consultations.

The Theological Consortium of Greater Columbus includes Trinity Lutheran Seminary, the Pontifical College Josephinum, and the Methodist Theological School in Ohio. Bexley Hall Episcopal Seminary is an associate member.

Great Emergence Author to Speak Friday April 23 at Trinity Lutheran Seminary

-
Author Phyllis Tickle believes that about every 500 years the church undergoes a period of upheaval. One example is the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century. She also believes that contemporary Christianity is in the midst of such a tectonic change. She calls it the “Great Emergence.”

The author of The Great Emergence: How Christianity is Changing and Why, Tickle will discuss this phenomenon in two presentations on Friday, April 23, at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, 2199 E. Main Street in Bexley. The cost of the event is $50 and registration is required.

Tickle explains that during these periods of upheaval, old forms of spirituality are replaced with new ones. Existing forms do not become obsolete or invalid. “Just as the Protestant Reformation did not spell the end of the Roman Catholic Church—it emerged stronger and more vibrant—mainline denominations won’t disappear,” she says.

Tickle is the founding editor of the religion department at Publisher’s Weekly, the author of more than a dozen books and the Divine Hours series, which includes The Divine Hours: A Complete Guide to the Ancient Practice of Fixed-hour Prayer.

To register online, visit www.TrinityLutheranSeminary.edu, or contact Erin Reynolds at 235-4136.

Se suspende reunión de presidentes en Guatemala

(Meeting of presidents in Guatemala canceled)

Two films noted in the 2010 Columbus Jewish Film Festival.

-
Two documentary films of note in the Columbus Jewish Film Festival:

The Jazz Baroness, about jazz composer and pianist, Thelonious Monk, and a benefactor, Nica Rothschild.

This documentary is a glimpse of a poignant moment in American culture. The film also offers "snap shots" of a friendship between a Holocaust survivor and an American jazz musician. Sadly, the film can only document the decline of Thelonious but the importance of the friendship with Nica in his life is obvious.

Menachim and Fred is the story of two brothers separated at the end of WWII. At the end of the war, Fred, age 16, makes his way to America, receives an education and has an engineering career.

Menachem, age 13, makes his way to Palestine and continues his Jewish life. He becomes a college professor in Israel.

The documentary records the complexity of family relations, made even more intricate by war and the shadow of the Holocaust.

Fred Raymes (second from left in photo) presented the story of his reunion with his brother, Menachim Mayer, after 60 years of separation, to the audience at the Columbus Jewish Film Festival’s “Docs and Bagels” day of documentary films on March 14.

Flanking Raymes in the photo above are Film Festival Co-Chairs June Frankel (left) and Carole Genshaft (right), along with Film Festival Director Emily Schuss (far right).

The Columbus Jewish Film Festival will present its full line-up of international films on Nov. 7-9 and Nov. 14-16. For more information, visit the Columbus Jewish Film Festival website at cjfilmfest.org, or call (614) 559-6205.

Three more texting bans. Sharon Montgomery's reports on Bexley Public Radio.

-
Columbus City Council passed their primary offense ordinance Monday April 5: 6 yes, 1 absent. The Columbus suburb of New Albany passed theirs Tuesday evening April 6: 4 yes, 3 absent.

The New Albany sponsor listened to me with an open mind last month when I gave three reasons why their secondary offense needed to be a primary offense. One of the reasons was for getting it on the citation and crash report form so we can start counting violations and crashes, like we do with DUI. The sponsor changed it to a primary offense.

The Cleveland suburb of South Euclid's secondary offense (drivers can't talk on a hand-held phone, text, or use a computer) law went into effect Thursday April 1. The ordinance was sponsored by David Miller, South Euclid council president.

Some Central Ohio Trauma System members and I spoke again at Columbus. COTS apparently has been working behind the scenes with the City of Columbus. I'm hoping they're willing to coordinate efforts at the state level and with the growing interest in some of the high schools to get involved. I see a great place for them in education campaigns.

State Representative Nancy Garland (one of the two primary sponsors of HB 415 that passed the House 86-12 last Wednesday March 31 and the sponsor who has vigorously promoted the bill) attended the Columbus city council meeting, also.

I spoke again at New Albany and Rep. Garland also spoke.

Neither the Columbus nor New Albany ordinance provides a grace period for warnings. Each ordinance takes effect in about a month.

Rep. Garland is, predictably, handling this very skillfully. Obviously part of promoting her bill is being positive so she's not as free as I am to say some senators oppose this so strongly it's not likely HB 415 or SB 164 will get through the Senate. What Garland is saying is we don't know yet what the Senate will do with either bill so she advises local governments to do what they feel they need to do to make their communities safe.

Representative Garland and AAA will be strategizing soon. I told her Tuesday April 6 that some of the supporters I correspond with are just waiting for the word to start applying some pressure on the Senate committee.

I'm mostly overjoyed and relieved by these new laws, but I'm a little nervous about Columbus. The Columbus safety department seemed to be strongly behind this legislation: The safety director, assistant safety director, and the fire department have been vocal supporters; but today's newspaper story reported Police Chief Distelzweig saying things like "officers will use discretion" and, "It boils down to priorities." I hope those comments don't mean what they sound like. We'll see.

The snowball effect is already starting. Gahanna city council office got an e-mail today from a resident who hopes Gahanna will join Columbus. Gahanna high school students are ready to get involved. After I've talked more with them tomorrow and April 14, I'll report what they want to do. I don't want to jump the gun and report wrong or steal their thunder.

The General Assembly schedule online says sessions resume next week. Today's Senate Journal says the next session is Thursday. I think that session will not be a voting session and I don't think they'll do any committee assignments until next week. As soon as HB 415 gets assigned to a Senate committee, I'll let supporters know, and give them contact information for the chair.

Bolivia repatriará restos de Escalante

(Bolivia to repatriate Escalante’s remains)

(Dry Law in effect in Costa Rica during Holy Week)
